To obtain an identity card it is necessary to refer to the Population Registry Office (Anagrafe) presenting,

• three identical and recent photographs;
• a valid passport;
• a valid permit to stay or the application for the renewal of the expired permit. 

The identity card:

This is valid for five years and is not valid for travel abroad; It is not valid for travel abroad, nor does it entitle a foreign national to stay in Italy in the absence or on expiration of his/her permit to stay, unless otherwise provided for by international conventions or agreements.
