Foreign nationals who intend to stay in Italy must request a permit to stay.

Those who arrive in Italy for the first time have 8 days in which to request a permit to stay.

Those who are already in Italy and whose permit to stay is due to expire, must request its renewal within the periods indicated below and in any circumstances, no later than 60 days from expiry.

For the permit to stay to be issued it is necessary to have:

• the request form;
• a valid passport, or equivalent document, with the appropriate entry visa, if required;
• a photocopy of the same document;
• four identical and recent passport-sized photographs;
• a 14.62 Euro revenue stamp

Renewal of a permit to stay must be requested at least 60 days before its expiry, for those permits which are valid for one year;

Expiry of a permit to stay is the same as that of the entry visa for a period of up to one year for purposes of study or professional training.
