Issue and Renewal of Permit to Stay
Where to go
Foreign nationals may request, for study purposes for periods longer than three months, the issue/renewal of a permit to stay, only from post offices with a "Sportello Amico” sign (Friendly Counter). For help in compiling the forms contained in the kit provided, you may use the free services of a “Patronato” office (Aid Societies offering advice and social assistance).
What to do at the Post Office
All post offices have a yellow kit with forms to be carefully completed.
What to do at the Municipal Office or at the Patronato (Aid Society) Office
Those who refer to the Patronato office do not need to use the paper kit but may get free expert advice in filling in the forms.
The full list of Aid Society offices is available at http://www.portaleimmigrazione.it/
Where to deliver the kit
The kit must be handed in to post offices with a “Sportello Amico” sign, in an unsealed envelope.
A passport must be shown, and if requesting permit renewal, it is also necessary to hand in a copy of the permit to stay which is due to expire.
The Post Office clerk will issue a receipt which, when attached to the expired permit, replaces and has equal value to the previous receipt issued by the police station.
Costs
27,50 Euro by means of a postal payment slip for a permit to stay of more than 90 days. The payment slip is available at Post Offices with a Sportello Amico sign;
14,62 Euro for the revenue stamp;
30,00 Euro to pay at the Post Office desk on handing in the completed form.
For issue of the Permit
The Immigration Office of the Police Headquarters will call the applicant for photo-fingerprinting, by means of a recorded delivery letter and mobile phone text message to the address and phone number given in the application and will fix an appointment to collect the permit to stay.
